Block Paved Driveway | Cleveleys

This project began with a front garden that offered no practical benefits to the homeowner. The original space was largely overgrown with weeds and bushes, with a narrow, impractical path leading to the front door. A low, dated brick wall and a small gate did little to enhance the property, which lacked any off-road parking and had limited kerb appeal. The mission was to completely transform this unused space into a valuable and attractive asset.

Project Overview:

Phase 1: Site Clearance & Demolition

The first phase involved a complete and thorough clearance of the site. The old brick boundary wall and its foundations were broken up and removed, along with the existing gate and concrete path. All shrubs, bushes, and organic matter were dug out and cleared to expose the ground level.

Phase 2: Full Excavation & Groundworks

With a clear site, we proceeded to excavate the entire area to the specified depth required for a durable driveway. A heavy-duty geotextile membrane was laid down to prevent the new sub-base from mixing with the earth below and to suppress future weed growth. We then installed a thick layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate, which was compacted in layers using a plate compactor to create a solid, load-bearing foundation.

Phase 3: New Fencing Installation

Before paving, a new boundary fence was erected along the property line. This involved digging new post holes, setting wooden posts in concrete to ensure stability, and then attaching the fence panels to provide a smart, private, and secure new boundary.

Phase 4: Block Paving & Edging

A screeded layer of sharp sand was prepared as a bedding course for the pavers. High-quality charcoal block pavers were then laid by hand in a 45-degree herringbone pattern across the main area. A constrasting border of light grey block pavers was laid around the perimeter, set in concrete for extra strength and to provide a rigid frame for the driveway.

Phase 5: Dropped Kerb and Tarmac Crossover
To ensure legal and safe vehicle access, the public footpath and kerb were professionally excavated. New kerbstones were installed at a lower level to create the dropped kerb. The crossover area was then expertly laid with fresh tarmac, ensuring a smooth, durable, and council-approved transition from the public road onto the new driveway.

The End Result:

The result is a total transformation that has dramatically improved both the functionality and appearance of the property. The once-useless garden is now a spacious, modern driveway providing essential off-road parking for multiple vehicles. The clean lines of the block paving and the new fence have given the home a major boost in kerb appeal, creating a welcoming and impressive entrance.
