Block Paved Driveway | Preston

The project began with a driveway that was failing both functionally and aesthetically. The existing surface was a patchwork of cracked, uneven tarmac and a messy gravel area. This combination not only looked untidy and neglected but also failed to provide a stable, practical surface for parking. The overall impression was one that detracted significantly from the home’s appearance. Our mission was to create a brand new, unified driveway that would maximise the available space, provide ample parking, and dramatically boost the property’s kerb appeal. Classic block paving was chosen for its durability and timeless style.

Project Overview:

Phase 1: Full Site Excavation

The first step was a complete excavation of the existing driveway. All the old, broken tarmac and loose gravel was broken up and removed from the site, along with a significant amount of underlying soil, to achieve the required depth for the new driveway construction.

Phase 2: Sub-Base Construction & Compaction

With the ground cleared, we laid a heavy-duty geotextile membrane over the exposed soil to act as a separator and weed barrier. We then constructed the new foundation, laying a deep, consolidated layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate. This was thoroughly compacted with a plate compactor to create a solid, stable, and level base, which is crucial for preventing future sinking or movement.

Phase 3: Screeding & Paving

A layer of sharp sand was spread over the compacted sub-base and screeded to create a perfectly smooth and level bed for the pavers. High-quality, grey tumbled-effect block pavers were then laid in a classic 45-degree herringbone pattern. This strong, interlocking pattern is ideal for driveways as it distributes the weight of vehicles very effectively.

Phase 4: Bordering & Finishing Cuts

A double-row border using contrasting charcoal-coloured block was installed around the perimeter. The involved precision cutting of the main pavers too ensure a neat and tight fit against the decorative edge, which frames the driveway and provides structural strength.

Phase 5: Jointing & Final Compaction
To complete the installation, kiln-dried sand was swept liberally across the entire surface, filling every joint between the blocks. A vibrating plate compactor was then passed over the whole driveway. This vibrates the sand deep into the joints, locking the blocks rigidly in place and creating a strong durable, and integrated surface ready for immediate use.

The End Result:

The transformation is remarkable. The new block paved driveway has created a clean, expansive, and elegant entrance to the home. It provides a huge amount of practical off-road parking space while significantly enhancing the property’s overall value and appeal. The classic design and quality materials ensure it will look fantastic for many years to come.
