Our goal was to completely redesign this messy and impractical space and create a clean, contemporary patio while managing the sloped garden. The design combined the cool tones of Indian sandstone with the natural warmth of timber sleepers to create a stylish, multi-functional area.
Project Overview:
Phase 1: Excavation & Groundworks
The transformation began with a full excavation of the site. All gravel, weeds, and old debris were removed. The area was dug out to create a solid, level sub-base for the new patio.
Phase 2: Sleeper Wall & Planter Construction
To retain the higher lawn area, we constructed a robust retaining wall using new, pressure-treated wooden sleepers. These were securely fixed together to create a durable and attractive raised planter bed. A custom-built step, also made from sleeper, was seamlessly integrated into the wall to provide stylish access to the upper garden.
Phase 3: Patio Foundation & Pavingย
A new, compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 aggregate was laid to form a solid foundation. The patio itself was created using high-quality Indian sandstone slabs in a cool grey tone. The slabs were laid in a random pattern on a full mortar bed for stability.
Phase 4: Decorative Border & Finishing
A smart, dark charcoal block paver was used to create a contrasting border around the entire patio. This neatly frames the sandstone and defines the edge against the new sleeper wall and existing structures. The patio was then jointed with a hard-wearing compound to secure the slabs and prevent weed growth.
The End Result:
The finished project is a complete success. The once unruly garden is now a sophisticated and highly practical outdoor living space. The sleek Indian sandstone patio provides a perfect area for furniture and entertaining, while the raised sleeper beds add a modern, architectural element and create a beautiful planting opportunity.
